Hi Folks
You have probably noticed that the 2012 season was a bit of a disappointment for me, initially not being able to compete after falling during my annual snowboarding trip in February and when I could ride, I struggled with fitness as the injury was causing me problems.
The doctors have finally given me a clean bill of health in relation to my shoulder, the MRI scan picked up a fracture which has now healed and no longer gives me any pain, so no surgery is required. It's still not 100% but I'm hoping this will improve over time.
Whilst I've not been racing I've thought long and hard about the whole scene, the cost, the effort, the hard work and the fact that I've had some annual leave left at the end of the year and I've come to the sad conclusion that I'm not enjoying it enough anymore to justify it all.
So I have cancelled my gym membership and decided to hang up my leathers and announce my retirement from road racing with immediate effect. Its not something I've taken lightly and I'm not quite sure how I'm going to fill the void or re-create the buzz of competing.
It's been a long road, 12 years of ups and downs, tears and tantrums, some trophies, a lot of hard work, a lot of travelling and lots of fun, but it's time to try something else. I'm not sure what, but I'll think of something!!
The list of personal thanks could be endless, and apologies if I have missed anyone out, but in no particular order there have been some very special people around me, my girlfriend Louise who helped make it all possible, my parents, my brother Stuart and Claire, Cheryl Ruddy, Big Ju, Charlie, Sean and Big Daz for twirling spanners over the years, Claire for the endless cups of coffee, bacon butties and van cake, Paul Meadows for all his art and web work, Grandad Albert Hornbuckle RIP, Richard Glover for his amazing photography, Nicola, Paul and Karl Gatenby, Rob and Janet Hall, Sue Pollin, Shiela Oldfield, Steve Tomes for his advice and Phil Murden for inspiring me in the first place .
I am not forgetting Kerrigan Read #100, Stu Hall #17, Rob Oldfield #28, Kingsley Ruddy #29, Graham Taylor #17, Jamie Harrison #91, Rob Simcock #31 and Lee Wilson #80, Christian "Bomber" Slater #166 and Alan "Bez" Beresford for some amazing racing and paddock support, everyone else I have raced with or against over the years, all the EMRA, New Era and Derby Phoenix officials and medical staff. Dr Nikki Thomas, Marshall's Sue and Paul Hunt, Orange Simon (& Ree) and the rest of the Orange army. Without your support none of us could do it! Mark Wright at Holbeach Tyres, Gary Hartshorne at Bridgestone Tyres, Gav Goddard at GIA Engineering, Colin Davies at Shockwave Suspension; Dave East of East Engineering Ltd; Jamie and Paul at Granby Motors, Chris Utting (for the paintwork) and John at BTK Leathers.
Finally to all my sponsors who have remained loyal and helped me over the years KBC Helmets (Connie, Loz and Amanda); Sprint Dampers (Jono); NGK Spark Plugs; SPR Dyno (Sam and Pete); Chatsworth Signs (Paul); Lindstrand Leathers (John and Anders); Censol (John & Andrew); Pidcock Motorcycles (Mark, Chris Pidcock and Sam).
I'd just like to say a BIG THANK YOU to you all for your support, assistance, guidance, friendship, sportsmanship and most of all being there. Its been one hell of a journey.

Cadwell Park Rounds 3 & 4 - ACU Clubmans Championship
Following his lacklustre results from the first round, Phil and the Team headed to one of his favourite circuits, the fantastic rolling countryside of Cadwell, in the hope of improving his Championship position. Phil was looking forward to trying a new type of tyre this weekend and he’d also managed to spray the bodywork and replace the damaged petrol tank – and it looked fantastic!
With the meeting being held over the Bank Holiday, the test day was on the Saturday and the Team had plenty of time to set up the awning, etc.
The morning sessions were used to “get his eye in” and Phil then changed from the slicks he’d been familiar with for nearly 6 years to a new, treaded Bridgestone. Initial impressions were not that favourable – although there wasn’t anything radically wrong with them either! But after a few adjustments to the suspension Phil became more accustomed to them and improved his times slightly.
The Friday evening was spent changing to the newly painted bodywork and putting the bike through scrutineering - and the bike looked great!
After initially trying the tyres in practicing, Phil decided to use them in practice and Race One to see how they held up. Phil had also (finally!!) got the new Lindstrand Leathers back after adjustments and set off in practice......however he was so, so lucky as both the new paint and leathers were nearly ruined in the first 200 yards! As he'd rolled out of the holding area along with the other riders, a 600cc competitor ran underneath him at the hairpin. Lifting slightly, Phil followed him through Barn and just as they began to build speed the 600 simply crashed to the ground! Luckily, Phil narrowly managed to avoid both rider and machine and continued his practice.
In Race One Phil got an average start and the cold conditions were immediately highlighted when one of the front runners highsided exiting the Gooseneck. It turned out to be a fairly steady, uneventful race and Phil was really struggling with the jump over the Mountain finishing 8th. The tyres were ok but still felt vague, although they gave lots of grip.
Phil got a poor start in Race Two when the lights went on/off/on and then off! He wasn't the only rider caught out and was lucky not to get a jump start penalty. Struggling to maintain his quick pace his times dropped off, and after a few silly mistakes he was mugged on the last two laps finishing 11th, frustrated and annoyed!
Fitting a new set of tyres for Sunday's Race One, Phil got a better start and pushedfrom the off. He was just hanging onto the two riders in front but again faded on the last 2 laps as his times dropped off and he finished 8th. Although disappointed he was boosted slightly as he didn’t realise he was as high as 6th!
For the second and final race of the weekend the weather had deteriorated and it was much colder and extremely windy. Battling the elements as much as the track Phil didn’t feel fast and it showed, his lap times were slower and he couldn’t settle into a rhythm. Phil finished 11th but the bike and rider were upright and Phil gained vital points.
Again, frustrated and disappointed with both the results and his lap times Phil hopes to improve at Anglesey in June!!

Cadwell Park Rounds 14 &15
Phil and the Team were eagerly anticipating the final Rounds of the Derby Phoenix Championship, keen to make amends for the lacklustre performance from earlier in the season. Although the winner was already acknowledged, the remaining positions were still to be decided and Phil was just 7 points clear of sixth.
Phil had taken a different approach to the meeting in his attempt to secure fifth in the final standings by ensuring the bike was finished the previous weekend (it’s normally a last minute panic!), getting early nights and also trying to stay hydrated in the week leading up to the event.
Arriving in torrential rain the caravan was quickly set up for the test day on the Friday, although it was far to wet to attempt to put the awning up. Phil missed the first two sessions of the morning as it was still damp – although it was drying quickly – and began setting up and preparing the bike. The preparation work in the week was soon apparent when he was pleased to learn he’d been easily circulating in the low 1.38’s on worn tyres. The day went well and Phil was in good spirits as he readied the bike for Saturday’s action.
Lining up in fifth (his Championship position) for Race one, Phil made a great start nearly slipping under second as they sped up Coppice for the first time. Relegated to fourth he was determined to stay with the front-runners and pushing hard he began to reel in third place as the laps wore down. Seizing his opportunity, he slipstreamed his rival on the Start/Finish straight and went underneath him as they sped up the hill through Coppice. Unfortunately Phil made a minor error as they sped along Park Straight and momentarily ran on the grass (apparently it was rather more than just ‘running on the grass!’) but he didn’t shut off, although he was pushed back to fourth again. On the final lap Phil was pushed back to fifth but was pleased with his pace and lap time, getting back in to the 1.35’s again.
Starting from the same grid position as earlier, Phil made another good start and was sitting in third when light rain began to fall. Driving past third onto Park straight he was soon upon the leader who was being cautious in the tricky conditions and Phil was quite disappointed when the race was stopped.
On the re-start Phil wasn’t so fortunate and was battling in fifth/sixth for the majority of the race. Getting pushed back to eighth on the penultimate lap, he was lucky to survive a massive slide as they exited Charlie’s 2 for the last time and lost all drive, seeing a rival simply drive past him. Although disappointed with ninth (and the fact he was now sixth in the standings), it was a thrilling, close race and judging by the reaction of the commentator Phil was extremely lucky to finish with his ‘moment’ being described as “save of the day”!!
Heavy overnight rain left the track very wet although Phil was quietly confident of his wet weather skills. Again Phil made a great start, slotting into third but the race was soon flagged due to an incident. On the re-start an extremely determined Phil leapt off the grid and lifting a rival into Coppice moved into second only to be pushed into third as his Championship rival rode round him up the hill. Comfortably following him, Phil chose his moment to pass and nipped underneath him along the Finish straight. Soon after it was all change again as he was again relegated to third then elevated to second when the leader fell exiting The Gooseneck. On the penultimate lap he was pushed back to third where he finished, his second podium of the year.
The final race was a nervous affair as the weather was still playing games. Just as it seemed to clear, the light rain continued to fall ensuring it was going to be a ‘wet’ race. A fantastic, trademark, “Jagger Racing” start saw Phil get the holeshot up the hill into Coppice again and he led the race for just over 3 laps. His only complaint was a slight lack of rear grip as he tipped into Barn and this was to lose him the lead as a small slide allowed a rival to pass as they sped over the line. He was pushed back to third by a rival on a new BMW with traction control but managed to keep him in sight until, on the final lap another rival made a rather messy lunge as they peeled into Mansfield. Seeing “red”, Phil chased after him and determined to end the season on a high he made a rather ambitious move into the left-hander at the bottom of the Mountain. Carrying far too much speed Phil swept underneath him but was lucky not to run on the grass and was immediately passed back as he slowed to make the right up the steep tarmac, crossing the line fourth. Although frustrated, Phil but was overjoyed when he realised he’d secured fifth in the Championship and on his return to the paddock he was told he was 23 seconds clear of sixth!!
After a long and exiting season Phil would like to say a MASSIVE thanks to Louise, his long suffering partner for all her help and support, Stu and Claire, Big Ju and Claire and Charlie for all their help and preparation and also to any one who took the time to come along and support Jagger Racing this season.
Phil would also like to extend his thanks to his Sponsors for their help, without whom it would not have been possible: KBC Helmets, NGK Spark Plugs, Lindstrands Leathers, Sprint Dampers, DXP Design, Chatsworth Signs, Censol, SPR Racing and Autoborepair@Breaston.
See you all next year on the grid………Jagger

Snetterton Report Rounds 5&6
After 10 days - and late nights! - of frantic repair work Phil managed to finish the damaged Suzuki at 6pm on the Thursday.......and promptly left at 7pm for Snetterton!! The test day on the Friday was used as a shakedown and Phil was pleased with the way the bike was working. After a thorough check the bike was prepared and readied for Saturday's racing.
Getting a good a start in Race one, Phil got away with the leaders, before being relegated to 5th by a quicker rider sweeping past. Setting a reasonable race pace he made steady progress, until one of of the leaders -a superstock guest rider - made a mistake on the last lap and sat up abruptly exiting Russells Chicane forcing Phil to ride over the rumble strip, narrowly avoiding him. This elevated him to fourth.
Getting another great start from the front row in race two there was a close call into the first corner as a rival clipped his boot as he passed round the outside. Phil managed to stay on in fifth, hanging onto the back of fourth place. He settled into a rhythm and enjoyed passing and re-passing fourth place. On the penultimate lap the superstock rider again made a mistake, out braking himself into the Esses and Phil was elevated to third place. Making a conscious effort for a clean, smooth, fast lap, Phil caught the backmarkers on the final part of the circuit and got through well, covering his line into Russell's Chicane, sweeping between two more backmarkers up the start/finish straight. Powering over the line he narrowly beat fourth place and claimed a fantastic THIRD and Phil's first trophy for 2010. After the problems at Cadwell this was quite an emotional moment. The team were all very, very happy.
Due to plenty of time remaining at the end of all the regular races the club decided to run an extra Championship race. Phil got a reasonable start but the quicker, lead group of riders got away. Phil soon became part of a battle for 4th through to 6th place. He had just started to close the gap on the final lap hoping to put a move in, only to be thwarted by backmarkers through the Esses and the Bomb Hole. Although disappointed with the outcome the useful pit signals meant Phil was able to pass the backmarkers without worrying over his position, finishing in 6th place.
Sunday's races were increased to 15 laps (from 10 on the Saturday). With this in mind Phil fitted new tyres and also brake pads following practice and the 3 races on Saturday. With no practice on the Sunday Phil had to 'scrub' the tyres on the sighting lap. Wary of the fresh rubber and new pads and also the slightly cooler temperature due to the earlier race time, Phil got a poor start by his usual standards and struggled to settle into a rhythm. This allowed the pack behind him to close and attempt passes only for them to run wide and allow him to move back underneath. Clearly struggling, Phil was becoming increasingly frustrated with each lap. A rival made a move exiting the Bomb Hole only to slide off as he changed direction at Russell’s and Phil was very lucky to miss both rider and machine. This only added to Phil's frustrations and to make matters worse on the next lap he narrowly avoided yet another back marker on the very fast entrance to the Esses forcing Phil to sit up and shoot up the slip road at high speed. This effectively ruined any repeat of the earlier results and a disappointed Phil brought the Suzuki home in 11th place.
After a chill out and a severe talking to from the Team Phil lined up for the final race eager to make amends. A slight delay due to oil from the previous Sidecar race along the Start/Finish straight didn’t help and as a precaution (and also to clear the cement dust) the riders were given two sighting laps. A great start got him amongst the leading group and at the end of the 1st lap Phil was in 5th place. Feeling much more relaxed he slowly began to close the gap on the two riders in front and could see a number of places he was stronger than his nearest rival. On the final lap he seized his chance and easily passed him on the brakes into the Esses. Driving hard through Coram he darted past a backmarker and covered his line into the chicane and sped over the line in 4th place.
The fantastic results had taken Phil from 8th to 5th in the Championship.
Phil would like to say a MASSIVE thanks to his girlfriend and Charlie for all their help repairing the bike following Cadwell, put simply it wouldn’t have happened without you! Big Ju, Claire and John for coming along to help and support and Chez for the help with the arm pump! Also Jono at Sprint and Amanda and Steve at KBC for their assistance yet again.
